    Rodent
Poison
Rats are
disease carriers. They present serious health and
safety risks. According to the CDC, Center for Disease
Control, mice and rats are capable of spreading more than 35
diseases and illnesses. One option for controlling rat
populations is rodent poison. These poisons are made
with extremely toxic chemicals prepared in lethal
doses. The use of rodent poison is considered to be
cruel and inhumane. All of these poisons are slow to
kill, sometimes taking up to two weeks, after ingestion, to
kill the rats. This results in a prolonged, painful,
torturous death for the rats.
There are
many different types of chemical rodent poison on the
market. Some types of rodenticides are made with
anticoagulants, metal phosphides, hypercalcimea inducers,
and other toxic combinations. None of these poisons
cause immediate death. The use of these rodenticides
ensures a slow, agonizing death for rodents and rats.
Rodent poisons are inhumane and are dangerous to use.
Other animals, pets, children, and users are at risks with
exposure to these chemicals. They should only be used
in extreme cases, as a last resort. Natural and
environmentally safe preventative measures should be taken
as soon as any rat, mouse, or rodent activity is detected,
before the situation gets “out of hand”. Some commonly
used rodent poisons are:
1. Rampage 15-gram Place Pacs
Rodenticide (100 count): This rodent poison is the
fastest acting rodenticide available. It kills the rat
one to two days after it has ingested the poison. It
comes in convenient easy to use packets. Simply, place
the packets around the infested area and the rats will chew
into them. This powerful poison is effective on most
warfarin and anticoagulant resistant rats and rodents.
Rampage contains Bromethalin as the active ingredient.
A lethal dose for a rat is 6-7 grams and for mice, it is 2-3
grams. This rodenticide is available online from
Gemplers for $88.60. (Box of 10 packets -
$7.35)
2. Hawk
Bait Chunx Rat and Mouse Bait (4lb pail): This is a
single feed, anticoagulant poison. It delivers
effective results in four to six days. This
rodenticide is effective for most warfarin resistant
rats. It is made with human food ingredients to entice
rats. The one ounce blocks are made with a low wax
formula for use in all weather conditions and in damp
areas. The blocks fit easily into bait stations,
burrows, and small openings where the rats live. This
rodent poison is available online from Gemplers for
$30.95. (9lb pail - $58.25)
